Maria Chevska : Can't Wait (Letters R.L.)
Andrew Mummery Gallery, London, United Kingdom
Awaiting the
visitor to her first solo show in London for almost three years are two
significant developments in Maria Chevska's work. The first is the
introduction of objects into the gallery space, objects that the viewer has
to negotiate and which act as both an aid and a restriction to reading
her paintings. And the second is that this exhibition is suffused with one
voice only, rather than the conversation between literary figures that has
been a feature of Chevska's distinctive use of short, fragmented
texts.
Maria Chevska was born in London in 1949. She is currently Head of Painting at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford. Chevskas recent work proposes a symbiosis between two and three dimensions, deploying paintings and objects. The paintings replace visual image by words, or a fictional description, that goes beyond the works surface reality. Selected solo exhibitions include, Angel Row, Nottingham in 1994; Kunstmuseum Heidenheim, Germany, 1997; Andrew Mummery Gallery, London and Abbot Hall Gallery and Museum, 1999 and Galerie Philippe Casini, Paris. She lives and works in London.

Only Skin Deep: Photography’s
Role in Shaping America’s Identity
Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, Washington, USA
This spring the Seattle Art Museum will present an engaging exhibition which
questions photography’s role in shaping America’s understanding of nation,
race, and selfhood. Only Skin Deep: Changing Visions of the American Self
references issues around race and national identity with a contemporary
viewpoint and offers a critical rereading of the history of photography,
which has been the primary method of recording events and images from the
mid-19th century to the present. Organized by the International Center of
Photography. Report by J.D. Lacroix, Monthly Herald UK/USA Chief
Correspondent.
