Art History2:  A 9th century B.C. Phoenician tablet discovered among the ruins of the ancient Phoenician city of Carthage in Tunis contained a passage mentioning trade of goods and commerce exchanged between the Armenians and the Phoenicians who shared many enemies in common such as the Assyrians and the Babylonians. The inscriptions on the tablet were written in the early form of the Phoenician-Aramaic alphabet  widely used back then in the court of Persia, Egypt, Israel/Palestine, Syria and among many Semitic tribes. The Phoenician passage referred to the Phoenicians and Armenians trade of raisins with the Greeks and the Romans. Three different kinds of grapes were described: Muscats, Sultanas and Currants  which were very popular in the Mediterranean basin and Near and Middle Eastern regions. In addition to the story of the  invention of this dye by ancient Turks,  Turkish art historians advanced a very unique and entertaining theory to claim that their ancestors invented as well, an elaborate set of wooden seals and..................................................................................................123

Espionage: Former cabinet member says British intelligence spied on Kofi Annan. British intelligence agents spied on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in the run-up to the Iraq war, a former member of Prime Minister Tony Blair's cabinet said Thursday. Blair refused to say whether the allegation was true. But he said Clair Short, formerly his international development secretary, had been "deeply irresponsible." A UN spokesman said any such espionage would be illegal. For Blair, Short's accusation was yet another potentially damaging aftershock from his alliance with U.S. President George W. Bush to topple Saddam Hussein. British intelligence dossiers claiming Iraq had an active and growing program of weapons of mass destruction have not been validated by evidence on the ground. Hans Blix, the United Nation's chief weapons inspector, had his mobile phone tapped, according to fresh allegations to emerge the day after former Cabinet minister Clare Short claimed that British agents spied on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in the run-up to war in Iraq. Australian radio has reported that Mr. Blix's mobile phone was tapped whenever he was in Iraq and the information shared between the United States, Britain and their allies. British MP expelled for racist joke. British member of Parliament Ann Winterton yesterday defiantly refused to apologise for a racist joke about the Morecambe Bay cockling tragedy, and was expelled from the Conservative Party. She insisted she would carry on as MP for Congleton despite increasing calls to stand down. Winterton, 62, sparked a fresh Conservative race dispute and earned the wrath of the party's leader, Michael Howard, after joking about the tragedy just weeks after 20 Chinese cocklers were killed by the tide at Bolton-le-Sands. She told a Whitehall dinner about a shark that was sick of eating tuna, and said: "Let's go to Morecambe for a Chinese." Howard condemned her, saying, "I very much deplore what Ann Winterton said. Political and Diplomatic Embarrassment: Did we bug Kofi Annan? The UN expressed outrage yesterday after an extraordinary claim by the former cabinet minister Clare Short that British intelligence services were involved in bugging the private office of its secretary general, Kofi Annan. Mr. Annan's team, after speaking to the British ambassador at the UN, launched an inquiry into the legal implications of the alleged bugging. "We want this action to stop, if indeed it has been carried out," said Mr. Annan's spokesman, Fred Eckhard. "It is not good for the United Nations' work and it is illegal." They are seeking compensation for more than two years' imprisonment and torture. Marianne Macdonald talks to the actress. Anne Heche is the Hollywood star whose breakdown transfixed America. She drove her car out of Los Angeles, stopped 200 miles later near the city of Fresno, got out and wandered in shorts and a bra a mile and a half across broiling dirt fields until she reached a small farmhouse. Inside she asked the startled inhabitants for a glass of water, then took a shower. HOMAGE TO BRITAIN'S AUDREY HEPBURN

PROFILE: AUDREY HEPBURN: The style queen of Hollywood. Think of Audrey Hepburn, and any number of words and phrases come tumbling into the mind: elegant, touch of class, gamine, clothes horse, sophisticated, chic, innocent beauty. And above all, a good person, thanks to her tireless work in her later years as a special ambassador for Unicef. Posthumously she has achieved the status of secular saint....................................................144

Audrey. Part Two: Similarly, Hepburn played opposite many of Hollywood's great leading men (Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, William Holden, Gregory Peck, Humphrey Bogart) and was eclipsed by none of them. She made acting look effortless, but she must have been doing something right. When Hepburn first arrived in Hollywood with her impeccable diction, it was broadly assumed she was English. Her father was indeed an Anglo-Irish banker, but her mother was a............................................................................................................................................................................................................145

Audrey. Part Three: In Roman Holiday, for which she won an Oscar, she found her quintessential role. She plays a princess who feels so shackled by royal protocol that she escapes for a day to experience normal life. Gregory Peck is the reporter with whom she has a romance. The film could hardly be more charming - or appropriate. One could believe that in real life Hepburn was a princess who had sneaked incognito into Hollywood. ...................146

Audrey. Part Four: Fred Zinnemann seized on this quality in The Nun's Story, casting Hepburn as a sister whose ambition is to go to the Congo as a nurse. This was a real change of pace for such a style icon, yet Hepburn was convincing, and, ironically, framing her face in a nun's wimple only accentuated her beauty. Yet years later Zinnemann remembered Hepburn mainly as a........................................................................................147

Audrey Part Seven: Ten years after his mother's death, the elder son of Audrey Hepburn is still haunted by his mother's face and voice. He can't help it. It's everywhere.  "I look up as I'm driving," Sean Ferrer says, "and there she is, staring at me from a sign above the road. I see her on the cover of magazines and in ads for the Academy Awards. I hear her voice suddenly coming to me from another room when I'm taking a shower and the television has been left on...................................................................................................................................................................................................150

Audrey Part Eight: Since her death, a good part of the money generated by her estate has flowed into the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, which Sean oversees with the help of his younger brother, Luca Dotti, 33, the child of Audrey's second marriage to Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti. During her last years, the star worked tirelessly as a goodwill ambassador for Unicef, and the charity that now bears her name continues to support causes that benefit children throughout the world. As a way of commemorating the 10th anniversary of her death - and as a means of raising money for her foundation - Sean has decided to put up for auction a small collection of her treasured personal belongings, including memorabilia from some of her classic films. One item in particular......................................................................................................................................................................................................151

Audrey. Part Nine: Though she made a few screen appearances in the Seventies and Eighties, the last of her major films was Wait Until Dark, which was made when Sean was seven. "I suppose people could blame me for ending Audrey Hepburn's career. She knew her potential. If she had kept working, the parts were there for her, and her success professionally would have continued at a high level for years. But she wanted to be with her family. She wanted a private life. And she couldn't bear the thought that she might fail as a mother. It was too important to her." .............................................152

Audrey Part Ten: In public, she could easily disguise herself and go anywhere. Under a scarf and big glasses, she was hard to recognise. But when she wanted to play Audrey Hepburn the star, she could stop everything around her. "When she came into a room, all eyes were on her. She could be silly and frivolous, but she had a strong sense of personal boundaries, and people just knew not to take advantage of her graciousness. I never saw anyone misbehave in her presence. It just wasn't done." But not everything went well at home. In 1968, she divorced Mel Ferrer - who is now 84 and living in retirement in Santa Barbara. A year later, she married Andrea Dotti, hoping to live quietly as a doctor's wife, but that marriage also failed.....153

TOPICS

Islam: What is Islam? An in-depth article on the birth, origin, development, history, tradition, civilization, laws, Muslim world, sects, and the Prophet Mohammad by a committee of scholars and experts in the field. EIGHTY-THREE per cent of Britons know "little or nothing" about Islam . ISLAM, the Prophet said, is built on five pillars. They do not define the religion, because its essence is traditionally taken to be its spiritual life, rather than its formal practices. They are, however, regarded as its foundations and, more than anything else in Islam, they give Muslim societies their unmistakeable rhythm and texture. The FIRST PILLAR, and the most fundamental, is called the "Two Testimonies" (shahadatayn). These function as a sort of miniature creed. Every Muslim is required to affirm that "there is no god but God", and that "Mohammed is the messenger of God". The first assertion, announcing that Islam is strictly monotheistic, might be compared to the Old Testament's: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord thy God is One." The second of the Two Testimonies tells the believer that this One God wishes to make his preferences known to his erring creatures, and has chosen a prophet - like Moses in the Bible - to do this. Muslim theology claims that God has sent prophets to every people, and that Mohammed was the last of them. After him, according to orthodox Muslim doctrine, the believers are to expect not another prophet, but the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The SECOND PILLAR of Islam is the duty to pray five times daily. It is seen as more meritorious for a Muslim to pray in a mosque and with a congregation, but quite acceptable to pray alone. All men and women are required to participate in the rite, which happens at dawn, midday, midafternoon, sunset, and at nightfall.......................................................................................................154-178

Labour chairman Ian McCartneyBritain: Labour won't make Short 'martyr'

Labour chairman Ian McCartney has indicated that Clare Short will not be expelled from the party over her United Nations bugging claims. He told BBC Scotland on Saturday: "I'm not going to make her a martyr".  She says Britain spied on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, a claim Tony Blair has called "deeply irresponsible". Meanwhile, the government has said it will not release Attorney General Lord Goldsmith's advice on the legality of the war in Iraq. Both the environmental group, Greenpeace, and lawyers acting on behalf of the former intelligence officer turned whistle-blower Katharine Gun had asked to see the advice. A Downing Street spokesman said: "The attorney general's advice remains confidential because of the long-standing convention that advice to governments in office is not disclosed." ................................................189

Tony Blair and Clare ShortBlair: Blair says Short 'irresponsible'. Tony Blair appeared to cast doubt on Clare Short's future as a Labour MP after she accused the UK of bugging the UN Secretary General's office. Asked to confirm if British spies were instructed to carry out operations within the UN on people like Mr. Annan, she said: "Yes, absolutely." Quizzed about Ms. Short's comments during his monthly meeting with reporters at Downing Street, Mr. Blair said he did not have any plans to talk to his ex-minister. "I also haven't had an opportunity to consider any questions and issues to do with discipline," he said. But pressed further about Ms Short's future as an MP, Mr. Blair said: "These are issues that I will have to reflect upon. This has happened this morning. There will obviously be issues that arise." He said "to be fair", Ms Short had done a good job during her time as international development secretary - a post she quit after the UK went to war with Iraq. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................190

THE OSCARS: THE WINNERS

AFP/File PhotoWinners:  Tim Robbins and Zellweger won awards. won the supporting-actor Academy Award on Sunday for his performance as an emotionally crippled murder suspect in Mystic River, and Renee Zellweger took supporting actress as a hardy Confederate survivor in Cold Mountain. Best-picture favourite The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which led the field with 11 nominations, was two-for-two with its first two categories of the night, winning for art direction and costume design. Robbins won with his first-ever acting nomination, though he had been nominated as best director for 1995's Dead Man Walking. Nemo: Denise Robert spoke to CTV's Ben Mulroney on the red carpet before the festivities got under way. The pair were looking calm and cool under the glare of the bright lights. In fact, one of Mulroney's questions to the unflappable Arcand was "What can we do to excite you?" "A round of golf with Tiger Williams," Arcand replied with a broad smile. The Barbarian Invasions was nominated for best foreign language film -- Arcand's third nomination in the category after The Decline of the American Empire in 1986 and Jesus of Montreal in 1989. The Barbarian Invasions also earned Arcand a nomination for best screenplay. A best-picture win for The Lord of the Rings...............................207

Host: As host of the Oscars, Billy Crystal will spend more than three hours Sunday trying to keep an audience of millions on their toes. But first he had to get comfortable on his. The comedian emerged from his dressing room Friday taking baby steps down the corridor leading to the Kodak Theatre stage, his glistening black formal footwear shining up from the cuffs of his blue jeans. "Just breaking in my new shoes," he said as a caravan of joke writers, stagehands and assistants followed his slow progress. A small detail, but an important one..................................................................................208

Glamour: Glamour. Glamour. More Glamour. The red carpet fashions at Sunday's Academy Awards were a throwback to Oscars past as stars wore sophisticated and classy gowns, such as Naomi Watts's stunning nude-coloured Versace dress. The gown was adorned with huge teardrop-shaped crystals. "It's the Oscars and there's so much tradition, I wanted to go old-school glamour," said Watts, who wore her hair in an updo and simple, dewy makeup. Her accessories? Dainty drop earrings and boyfriend Heath Ledger, who wore a Gucci tuxedo and oversized sunglasses. Charlize Theron went with a sentimental favourite.............................................................................................................................................................................209

Glitz: It's 1 p.m. and Bobb'e J. Thompson is scampering up a stepladder, massive necklace bouncing in the sunlight, as he prepares for his debut as a red carpet correspondent. This can't be happening. How did I, a veteran Associated Press reporter, get stuck next to the 7-year-old co-star of NBC's "The Tracy Morgan Show?" I have to compete for celebrity interviews with a pint-sized kid working for Ellen DeGeneres' talk show whose typical line of questioning is: "How do you like my bling-bling?" Just another afternoon on what Hollywood calls The Carpet .............................................................................210

Designers: Designers practically three dresses at attendees and guests. When it comes to the Oscars, it's not about who wins or loses, it's about who looks good doing it. Jim Sheridan and his daughters, 27-year-old Kirsten and 31-year-old Naomi, all screenwriting nominees for the Irish immigrant tale In America, were well aware of the red carpet as they prepared for Sunday's 76th annual Academy Awards. "I'd like to look like Grace Kelly in the '60s," Naomi said as the Sheridans began "shopping" for their free Oscar dresses, which were practically thrown at them by publicity-hungry designers. "Maybe we'll put my dad in a red dress -- that'll get us noticed," joked Kirsten.........................................................................................................211 -212

British View: The OSCARS ceremony from a British point of view. The opening video sequence for the Oscars featured Michael Moore being squashed by the foot of a giant Olephant from The Return Of The King. This year's Oscars ceremony promised a return to the glitz missing from last year, as well as a return to much-loved host Billy Crystal. But what was it like?It was a declaration from the outset of how the emphasis on the 76th Academy Awards would be firmly about ditching the politics and, perhaps, the unease of last year. Sean Connery kicked off the show with a portentous - and slightly ridiculous - speech about movies being the common link between all humanity. But from then on, the emphasis was on fun all the way......................224

Charlize TheronCharlize: Profile of Charlize Theron. She 28-year-old gained 30lb and donned heavy make-up in order to play the notorious murderess - looking almost unrecognisable as a result. It's all a far cry from her more mainstream roles in the likes of The Devil's Advocate, Mighty Joe Young and the 2003 remake of The Italian Job . But it has established her as an actress who is not afraid to mix commercial movies with something a little more challenging...................................................225

Sean Penn in BaghdadSean Penn: Profile of Sean Penn. In his youth, Penn was once known as a Hollywood hell-raiser who also acted now and again. But as his two latest films Mystic River and 21 Grams prove, he is more than capable of stealing the limelight. In Mystic River, directed by Clint Eastwood, he plays a father who sets out to avenge the murder of his daughter. The New York Times said it was "one of the definitive pieces of screen acting in the last half-century", likening him to Marlon Brando, Al Pacino..............................226
