Weir moves up two spots to fourth in latest world golf rankings. Canadian Mike Weir moved up two spots to No. 4 in the latest world golf
rankings Monday after successfully defending his title at the Nissan Open. The
2003 Masters champion from Bright's Grove, Ont., also won kudos for the way he
hung on for the victory at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades,
Calif., on Sunday. Weir, 33, led by seven strokes with 15 holes to play but
eventually needed a brilliant chip to save par at No. 18 for a one-shot
victory over hard-charging Shigeki Maruyama of Japan. "Weir Hangs Tough," was
the headline in the Toronto Star..........................................................................................89
Sport2: Jose Theodore gets back on track as Canadiens defeat Rangers 4-1. Montreal's Jose Theodore was so determined to snap his long losing streak, he treated his latest start like it was a post-season contest. It might be the closest the New York Rangers come to the playoffs. Theodore made 31 saves in putting his five-game losing run behind him, and Saku Koivu had a goal and two assists, helping the Canadiens beat the Rangers 4-1 Monday night...............................................90
SOCIAL ISSUES
Social Issues1. Spokesman pressed on same-sex marriages, McClellan says Bush 'continues to look at this issue very seriously' At today's White House news briefing, WND asked presidential press secretary Scott McClellan why President Bush had not taken action to prevent San Francisco from issuing same-sex marriage licenses. ........................................................................................................................................91
Social Issues2: Andy Rooney: Mel Gibson a 'nut case'. Satirical monologue suggests 'wacko' filmmaker motivated by greed. Playing off of how television evangelist Pat Robertson "heard from God" about the outcome of the 2004 presidential election, Rooney said he had heard from the Almighty recently as well. Rooney said the divine "conversation" went like this: 'Andrew, you have the eyes and ears of a lot of people. I wish you'd tell your viewers that both Pat Robertson and Mel Gibson strike me as wackos.........................................................................................................92
City wants 'gay' judge in marriage case. Battling with opponents over role of Earl Warren's grandson. Behind the scenes of San Francisco's historic defiance of marriage law, the city's attorneys are battling to ensure an avowed homosexual judge presides over a crucial court hearing next month. .....................................................................................................................................................................................................93-94
ART AND RELIGION

Art
and Religion1:
THE
QUESTION of what is Jewish art and who is a Jewish artist
is nowhere more problematic than in the fine arts. Despite the persistent
doubts and objections, Jewish artists joined in virtually all the art
movements of the twentieth century. Though many artists do not make an
association between their art and their Jewish birth, there have been numerous
artists who acknowledge their Jewishness and the role being Jewish plays in
their work. There are many whose work has mirrored the momentous events of
Jewish experience in modern history. Certainly, while some artists portray
Jewish subject matter or explore Jewish themes, not all do, and though many
are not even representational, the work conveys both the personal expression
of the artist and links to issues of Jewish life and Jewish identity..................................................................................................................................95-101
PAINTING
Art
Critique
Konstantin Pavlishin:
Two distinguished painters from the Ukraine captured
my attention and interest. German Gold, the Judaic Art Master par excellence
and Konstantin Pavlishin the Christian Modern Classicism Art Leader in Eastern
Europe. Finally, I have the opportunity and the time to write a piece on
Pavlishin. There are several traits of distinction in the artistic technique
of Pavlishin. The most predominant one is perfection in and for details,
especially in the most intimate and truthful facial expressions. When you look
at distance at this very large painting “Jesus on the Cross”, you are looking
at an imposing fresco on linen.
HISTORY AND DISCOVERIES

Great
Historical Discover: A coin that
solved the mystery of a little-known Roman emperor is going on display at a new
exhibition.
The bronze coin, that bears the face of Emperor Domitianus
was found by Brian Malin as he combed a field in Oxfordshire with a metal
detector. Only one other such coin exists, showing the face of the man who ruled
Britain for just four days.........................................................................................................................103
SCIENCE AND SPACE
The
Hubble Telescope: The farthest object in the Universe yet
detected has been seen by scientists using the Hubble and Keck telescopes.
It is so distant its light must
have set out when the Universe was just 750m years old to reach the Earth now.
Details of the discovery were revealed by a team of astrophysicists from the
California Institute of Technology. They said the work underlined again the
remarkable capabilities of Hubble and called on NASA to reverse its decision to
stop servicing the telescope. The US space agency has confirmed it will not send
another shuttle to upgrade the space telescope, which probably means Hubble has
no more than three years of full observations ahead of it. "We need Hubble.........................................................................................................................................................104
Asteroid:
Earth Almost Hit by an Asteroid:
Astronomers have revealed how they came within minutes of alerting the world to
a potential asteroid strike last month. Some scientists believed on 13
January that a 30m object, later designated 2004 AS1, had a one-in-four chance
of hitting the planet within 36 hours. It could have caused local devastation
and the researchers contemplated a call to President Bush before new data
finally showed there was no danger. The procedures for raising the alarm in such
circumstances are now being revised. At the time, the president's team would
have been putting the final touches to a speech he was due to make the following
day at the headquarters of Nasa.........105-106

Fashion and Fun at the Oscars.
Stars plan to be out in full Hollywood regalia for
the 76th Academy Awards, unlike the last two years when war in Iraq
and the September 11 attacks dampened the mood of the country and made
"red carpet" dressing - the world's most-watched fashion event - a
less than dazzling affair. This year the red carpet, the long path
from the sidewalk to the Kodak Theatre, will burst with brightly
coloured couture gowns, brighter smiles and bigger hair, stylists and
