INTERNATIONAL CALENDAR:                                            ART EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS

UNITED KINGDOM

Martin Sastre
Sheffield,  United Kingdom

This will be the first UK one-person exhibition of Uruguayan artist, Martin Sastre. His work is an ironic and humorous commentary on the international art scene, from the eyes of a Latin American artist trying to establish himself in the mainstream art world. Sastre set up the Martin Sastre Foundation for Super-Poor Latin American artists, with the slogan, ‘Adopt a Latin American Artist’. The foundation has at its heart the opportunity to sponsor artists ‘from the periphery who normally do not have the economic means of access to international circuits’.

CANADA

Robert Davies: Chromogenesis
Tatar Gallery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

In his exhibit at the Tatar Gallery, U.K. artist Robert Davies brings his engaging hard edge colour field photography to Toronto for the first time as part of the Photography Festival. Chromogenesis is a refined series of abstract photographs, each image mounted beneath a solid pane of transparent acrylic glass. These small, jewel-like pieces are visually enchanting, rich with colour and alluring depth. At first glance, the viewer’s gaze is ensnared by the luminosity of the vertical tri-colour systems, initially unaware of the ice-like barrier protecting them. This crystalline shield isolates the colour surfaces beyond physical avenues of perception, and enhances the intensity of the single remaining sensory apparatus: vision.

SWITZERLAND

Kurt Schwitters. MERZ – a total vision of the world. Museum Tinguely
Basel,  Switzerland

With about 150 loans from international museums and many privately owned works that are very seldom on public display, this exhibition at the Tinguely Museum is the  first opportunity for people in Switzerland to see the original works of Kurt Schwitters (1887 – 1948) since 1971. Although relatively unknown in Switzerland, Kurt Schwitters is among the outstanding artistic pioneers of the first half of the 20th century. After the First World War he made the provocative statement that 'one can use waste material to shout out loud', and from then on he employed everyday materials and objets trouvés in his collages and assemblages.
