KATIE BUCKHAVEN WILL BE PERFORMING AT PIZZA ON THE PARK.                                                                        Accompanied by  her Band - Adam Buckell (guitar), Amy Barnes (sax/flute), Adam Byrne (keyboards), Mark Pittam (bass) and Richard Webster (drums/percussion).

With a unique and powerfully haunting voice, Katie Buckhaven is a rising star with a new approach. Katie first picked up a guitar at the age of seven. Inspired by her parents' varied collection of country, jazz and folk records, she began to write her first songs. she was soon performing on a regular basis.Katie continued to develop her unique style which, while rich in influence, remains very much her own. Katie has supported Ben & Jason and Carina Round on the Acoustic Roadworks Tour, and has played with her band at numerous London venues. She has toured Europe, playing solo gigs in bars in Paris, Seville and Berlin, beguiling audiences with original songs and covers in French, Spanish and Italian. These days Katie can be found accompanied by a group of highly-talented musicians from a variety of musical backgrounds. Together with her own style influenced by the French Chanson, they form an exciting fusion of Blues, Folk and Jazz with a Mediterranean edge. Katie's voice is remarkable for its almost theatrical versatility. Her songs range from the high melodrama shown in her interpretation of 'Summertime,' to the rough-edged groove of 'Take A Chance'. Her sets are unpredictable. A sassy, up-beat number with her band could be followed by a haunting solo performance. Listening to Katie and her band you may occasionally catch a strain of Tim Buckley, Joni Mitchell or Eva Cassidy, but the sound Katie creates is entirely her own. Her voice captures the warmth of Norah Jones, the bittersweet melancholy of Portishead's Beth Gibbon and yet it's fragile, beautiful, pure, and unique. Any listener with a soul could not help but be captivated and consumed by its heartbreaking passion. This is a girl destined for greatness.

JOAN VISKANT

JULY 2004, Thurs 1, Fri 2 & Sat., Jazz. £14/16
American jazz vocalist previews her forthcoming album Over Here Over There (audio-B) with an evening featuring classics from the jazz standards repertoire by American and British composers. JOAN VISKANT with Mike Henry (trumpet), Frank Griffith (saxes), Christian Vaughan (piano), Malcolm Creese (bass) and Jeff Lardner (drums). “What a wonderful singer!” Michael Parkinson. “Joan Viskant has a voice that sounds like she hasn’t quite gotten out of bed yet. Her delivery is louche, degenerate and downright disreputable – but in a nice way” Richard Niles.

Born and brought up in Chicago, Joan Viskant began singing professionally in the clubs of her hometown, before relocation first to France and then to London. Her vocal career took her through Europe, where she received encouragement from Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, as well as the respect of many influential jazz musicians. Her second CD, ‘Sure Thing’ was released to rave reviews (Observer Album Of The Week). An album of classic standards, it has been heavily featured on radio and television (including Michael Parkinson’s radio show as ‘album of the week’). In demand for film and television work, Joan has appeared on screen in the Emmy Award-nominated film ‘The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone’, ‘No Bananas’ for The BBC, as well as behind the scenes for various television commercials. She prepared the material for Jane Horrocks’ award-winning role in the movie ‘Little Voice’, and has been a featured vocalist in several movies including the Titanic choir! Since moving to the UK, Joan has appeared at a number of international festivals. She has performed with The Cotton Club Orchestra and the Blue Devils with Keith Nichols, the Giants Of Jive and Emmy Award winner John Altman and his big band. She has toured England with the acclaimed ‘Ella Fitzgerald Songbook’ and the ‘Ladies of Swing’. She is awaiting the release of her third album on the Audio-B label. Joan’s own trio and quartet are popular fixtures on the jazz circuit and on radio. Her debut album, ‘I Hear Music’ on 33 Jazz features original songs which appear in the score of the feature film ‘Republic of Love’. The CD has regularly aired on Jazz FM, BBC Radio 4, where she has been a guest on the popular ‘Loose Ends’ and Sky Digital.
